Just How Bizarre is Our Drug Czar?
October 28, 2008
Drug Czar John Walters claims that finding a first time marijuana offender in jail for possession is like finding a unicorn. Here’s what we think.
You know what you can get for just seven cents per day? Not much! But, just seven cents a day will get you a MPP membership and the peace of mind that comes with knowing that you are helping the nation’s number one marijuana policy reform organization.

The opinions expressed below by our viewers and posters do not necessarily represent the opinions of the Marijuana Policy Project. These views are those of the individual authors alone. MPP does not condone or support the illegal use of marijuana. We do encourage open and frank discussion, but if a comment has been posted that is in some way significantly inappropriate, please e-mail us at socialnetwork@mpp.org to report it. Thank you, and we're looking forward to what you think!

Any old man with unicorns on the brain is “bizarre”
Comparing unicorns and first time felons is freaking insane.

Hey, I have an informative speech to write on the legalization of marijuana. It has to be roughly seven minutes long. What are some key points and attention grabbers that I could disclose in my speech?

If are government isn’t scared to lie about some little thing like marijuana you think they would care to lie about other more important stuff?

Many people know that this is factually a bag of lies and tricks, however it also fits this man’s maniacal and religious dogma. I am a christian that listens to science and my conscience and I believe the answer we seek to help others come to the truth and compassion is to give them the science and impress on them that statistically someone in their family may end up with a chronic debilitating condition in which Marijuana may offer the best solution as a medicine because of its lack of interference with the body’s functions and other medications. The day of cancer is coming to this nation in huge numbers because of the the way we produce what we consume and the large amounts that we consume as a nation. With this in mind we must use truth, common sense, compassion and understanding of others to bring them to accept marijuana as the medicine it really is. We need to bring them to the truth that God created marijuana and yes he also created opium, however opium is an addictive killer that destroys the liver and kidneys even if you need it and morphine as well. We need to get all the facts in one blog and get it out to the country and then then the world. Most of the time we only see one or two studies together. We need all medical studies that support marijuana as a cure and pain aid in one place so the country will see how many cancers it treats as well as Alzheimer and chronic inflammation and pain. Then ask them to search their hearts and consider all of pharmaceutic death drugs and the money they made from their drugs that kill and cause more physical ailments, and pose the question is this what any God would want for his or her people? All we are asking is the right to make our own choice of what medicine we use, and to keep our health, and jobs. Can you please help us by supporting medical marijuana patients rights so that anyone will have the right to make their own choice of what they put into their body that is called medicine.

I am living with issues and,AIDS/HIV, degenerative back and the list goes on!
Why doesn’t the world understand, this was medicine, we just made it illegal.
I use it on a daily basis, for most of my pains. And it works! And it works quick and, doesn’t have to, go through your liver and kidneys before, it hits your blood.
I thank The State of Rhode Island for having this law! I’ve lived here all my life! It’s our people who believed, it was a just cause! And going on 3 years later? It’s still helping people! And, I’m not dead, nor do I want to run down the street and buy harder drugs!
It helps me cope with my days, that I live. AIDS/HIV made my life into a living hell. And you want too send me too jail?
MPP, Thanks for all your support throughout the years! You’re all a geat team! Wish I knew all of you, in real life. One day, maybe I will!
Untill then, support medical marijuana!! Please?
Thanks!!!

Whether you are a supporter of Marijuana (recreational or medicinal) or not…..Why can’t people understand how much we are wasting on an endless “drug war” in a time when banks are closing, our government is blowing money left and right, and a lot of people are using drugs such as meth? Why does the DEA, or anybody else for that matter, expend the effort to prosecute and marr the reputations of simple smokers? If you ask me, smokers and cancer patients alike are better people than anyone in any government office for the large majority. Pointless and senseless! END THE CZARS!

I smoke Marijuana recreationally as well as other things. The things i’ve used Marijuana for in the past were headaches, colds, being depressed, along with many other things. Like anything, it can be abused.. but for the times it is abused the side effect is not death. The worst that’s ever happened to me from Marijuana is getting a headache and throwing up which was only 3 or 4 times over the years of use. I really think Marijuana should be legalized. Why would a substance that can work better than anything else on the market, and impossible to overdose on not be legal.

Marijuana should be legalized!……if not then they should make liquor n cigs illegal!…….There is no reason once so ever to make marijuana illegal!….This just proves that the goverment does not stick with the people of what should be done with things! Just because they cant make tax money off of it doesnt mean that they should make it illegal!……Someone should stand up about this n who ever agrees to stand up with them! i agree n one of these days i will try my hardest to make marijuana legal

I never knew I was a unicorn! In 2005 I was arrested for possession, my first charge of any kind unless you count speeding tickets. Not only did I have barely a gram on my person, the dog that was walked around my car did not alert until, the officer proceed to bang on my passenger side door. I spent the night in jail, had to pay fines and court costs that exceed two thousand dollars, as well as community service and addiction classes. I just find it hard to believe that our elected officials can look at us and bold face lie to everyone. Then again it’s not that hard to believe, and I hope that the change Obama is bringing will also include some honesty.

I don’t CARE, what is being said about POT, I have been smoking for a very, very, very very, very long time.
I don’t usually have a big appitite, Pot keeps my weight up, perfectly, There is
no man ALIVE, that could EVER STOP MY FROM smoking it.
If you want to stop something, STOP the damn CRACK, the GOVERNMENT
STARTED IT they should be held responsible until the last crack rock is off of the streets.
Take it to the heart, cause that is where I am giving it from, the heart.
Borrak has made history for all men and women, but he will not make history by taking MY pot from me, I said before, NO MAN, not even the good Lord could stop me from the P O T .

Is this not fraud? he receives a salary to perform a job, if he isn’t performing said job, yet collecting payment, for that job. Private, public, or civil, it’s still fraud, I thought the feds had a “program” to “report fraud”, as if they would do something about it. And isn’t the “Attorney General’s” job, to “investigate” fraud, or at least be “aware” of it? No wonder the US is so F’ed up look at the crap they waste money on.

How come our government thinks that pot is “evil” and should be illegal? I smoke it almost every day (sometimes even at school), and I’ve never been better or felt better before I started. I’ll do my best to help legalize it.
I’m a unicorn and I approve of this message.

OOOOOHH!!!OOOOOHHH!!! I found one!! ME. I have never committed a violent crime. no no wait, i haven’t committed any crime that has landed me in prison. I don’t have a “record” or hang with the wrong crowd. I will soon be going to jail purely for marijuana for a time of 420 days in a detention center. i’m in college, i don’t own weapons, i speak extremely well, and i’m liked by almost everyone i have ever met. well i guess i’m your unicorn. i hope to use that time to write a book. i want to get the message out that the government takes away our rights all to stop us from smoking a plant.
ooh ooh, i’m a first time offender too!! god we have incompetent officials.

Well what do you know I am quite possibly going to be a unicorn! After recently having my apartment ripped apart by the local law enforcement, I am being charged with possession of marijuana. I am a junior in college and achieve excellent grades along with having a satisfying social life as well. I have never had a history of violence or anything negative really. As a first time offender I am absolutely terrified as I may be kicked out of school. Time will tell my fate, but it has opened my eyes tremendously to the horrible oppression that respectable people like myself are living with. Massachusetts has decriminalized possession up to one ounce. How can just a few hundred miles away, my education and reputation are at risk of being stripped of me. I must say I will support the MPP’s policies until these horrid laws are in the past. I’m not a drunk, I’m not a criminal, I’m just a decent man living in a indecent time. I support legalization of marijuana for responsible adult use, and for medical treatment.

I just got over probation for a year for growing 3 plants in my closet for severe migraines and nausea. My wife trusts cops and got her loud mouth arrested for it. Far as that goes, fine, but she is also a nurse and I took the fall for her. Pot is for human consumption. I am for growing pot, eating pot, and smoking pot if you are big enought to see over the top of the table. that’s right. your dumbass idea of kids not being able to take pot is also stupid. they need it, too.
there will come a happy day when we take cannabis oil extract like we do vitamins now. kids and mentally ill need cannabis, too.
who told you different? grow up! we need to fire several hundred thousand cops and legalize cannabis. ADD kids are just desparate for pot to help them.

The senile old man needs to spout bizarre lies to keep his job. Our tax dollars pay him to distort the truth. It’s been going on for many years and the same old line of nonsense continues to be mouthed by mindless bureaucrats. Forget legalization. Decriminalization is the route to freedom. Get the government off my back. Let me grow a weed.

The only thing i’ve ever been arrested for is pot. i went to jail for my first offense. The whole ordeal got me jail time (2 days), probation (6 months), community service (don’t remember how long, but it seemed like forever and they treated me like crap), and cost me about $4 thousand. You might say i’ve been persecuted for my beliefs.
Is John Walters legally allowed to lie?
Plus, what is his point here? Isn’t it his job to enforce drug laws as they are written? If he doesnt support putting people in jail for a first offense, he’s not doing his job. The laws are the problem, Walters is just an idiot.

I think most people would be surprised to know that an otherwise law-abiding citizen when charged with simple possession (under 50 grams) is arrested, handcuffed, fingerprinted, photographed and held in communicato while they are being processed. If it is a first offense in New Jersey, an Attorney can ask for a ‘Conditional Discharge’, which means you pay a hefty fine somewhere around $1000 (an Attorney can cost up to about the same) and you are put on probation for one year and subject to random drug tests. This is the best case scenario. How many middle class Americans can afford these fines? The worst case scenario is also loss of license for up to 2 years and, while not likely but possible, up to 6 months incarceration. This is so far out of line that you have to wonder what the State Legislature is smoking! I think that, in reading comments on the various sites dedicated to eradicating these Draconian laws, the argument on both sides seems to be on the health benefits or detriments. I think this is wrong-minded. The fact is the government should not have the right to tell free men and women what they can and cannot do if it is not hurting anyone else. We all know that governments regulate behavior where someone else may be hurt by our actions. Some examples are seat belt laws or smoking bans. Whether you agree or disagree with this, at least a decent argument can be made for why the State is telling its citizens what to do and effectively taking the decision out of their hands. No such argument can be made for Marijuana use unless we were all asking for the right to smoke Pot while driving a sports car and handling a chain saw! We’re really only asking to be left alone. Stay out of our lives on this one. Let us enjoy our guilty pleasure. It wasn’t too long ago that a homosexual couple engaging in sex in the privacy of their own home, could be arrested and jailed. No one wants the State involved in our private lives but that is exactly what they have been doing for decades. Leave us alone. Respect our privacy. Let us make this decision for ourselves.
