I think most people would be surprised to know that an otherwise law-abiding citizen when charged with simple possession (under 50 grams) is arrested, handcuffed, fingerprinted, photographed and held in communicato while they are being processed. If it is a first offense in New Jersey, an Attorney can ask for a 'Conditional Discharge', which means you pay a hefty fine somewhere around $1000 (an Attorney can cost up to about the same) and you are put on probation for one year and subject to random drug tests. This is the best case scenario. How many middle class Americans can afford these fines? The worst case scenario is also loss of license for up to 2 years and, while not likely but possible, up to 6 months incarceration. This is so far out of line that you have to wonder what the State Legislature is smoking! I think that, in reading comments on the various sites dedicated to eradicating these Draconian laws, the argument on both sides seems to be on the health benefits or detriments. I think this is wrong-minded. The fact is the government should not have the right to tell free men and women what they can and cannot do if it is not hurting anyone else. We all know that governments regulate behavior where someone else may be hurt by our actions. Some examples are seat belt laws or smoking bans. Whether you agree or disagree with this, at least a decent argument can be made for why the State is telling its citizens what to do and effectively taking the decision out of their hands. No such argument can be made for Marijuana use unless we were all asking for the right to smoke Pot while driving a sports car and handling a chain saw! We're really only asking to be left alone. Stay out of our lives on this one. Let us enjoy our guilty pleasure. It wasn't too long ago that a homosexual couple engaging in sex in the privacy of their own home, could be arrested and jailed. No one wants the State involved in our private lives but that is exactly what they have been doing for decades. Leave us alone. Respect our privacy. Let us make this decision for ourselves.

The only thing i've ever been arrested for is pot. i went to jail for my first offense. The whole ordeal got me jail time (2 days), probation (6 months), community service (don't remember how long, but it seemed like forever and they treated me like crap), and cost me about $4 thousand. You might say i've been persecuted for my beliefs.
Is John Walters legally allowed to lie?
Plus, what is his point here? Isn't it his job to enforce drug laws as they are written? If he doesnt support putting people in jail for a first offense, he's not doing his job. The laws are the problem, Walters is just an idiot.

The senile old man needs to spout bizarre lies to keep his job. Our tax dollars pay him to distort the truth. It's been going on for many years and the same old line of nonsense continues to be mouthed by mindless bureaucrats. Forget legalization. Decriminalization is the route to freedom. Get the government off my back. Let me grow a weed.

I just got over probation for a year for growing 3 plants in my closet for severe migraines and nausea. My wife trusts cops and got her loud mouth arrested for it. Far as that goes, fine, but she is also a nurse and I took the fall for her. Pot is for human consumption. I am for growing pot, eating pot, and smoking pot if you are big enought to see over the top of the table. that's right. your dumbass idea of kids not being able to take pot is also stupid. they need it, too.

there will come a happy day when we take cannabis oil extract like we do vitamins now. kids and mentally ill need cannabis, too.

who told you different? grow up! we need to fire several hundred thousand cops and legalize cannabis. ADD kids are just desparate for pot to help them.

Well what do you know I am quite possibly going to be a unicorn! After recently having my apartment ripped apart by the local law enforcement, I am being charged with possession of marijuana. I am a junior in college and achieve excellent grades along with having a satisfying social life as well. I have never had a history of violence or anything negative really. As a first time offender I am absolutely terrified as I may be kicked out of school. Time will tell my fate, but it has opened my eyes tremendously to the horrible oppression that respectable people like myself are living with. Massachusetts has decriminalized possession up to one ounce. How can just a few hundred miles away, my education and reputation are at risk of being stripped of me. I must say I will support the MPP's policies until these horrid laws are in the past. I'm not a drunk, I'm not a criminal, I'm just a decent man living in a indecent time. I support legalization of marijuana for responsible adult use, and for medical treatment.

OOOOOHH!!!OOOOOHHH!!! I found one!! ME. I have never committed a violent crime. no no wait, i haven't committed any crime that has landed me in prison. I don't have a "record" or hang with the wrong crowd. I will soon be going to jail purely for marijuana for a time of 420 days in a detention center. i'm in college, i don't own weapons, i speak extremely well, and i'm liked by almost everyone i have ever met. well i guess i'm your unicorn. i hope to use that time to write a book. i want to get the message out that the government takes away our rights all to stop us from smoking a plant.

ooh ooh, i'm a first time offender too!! god we have incompetent officials.

How come our government thinks that pot is "evil" and should be illegal? I smoke it almost every day (sometimes even at school), and I've never been better or felt better before I started. I'll do my best to help legalize it.

I'm a unicorn and I approve of this message.
