i’m 21 yrs. old and broke my neck almost 3 yrs. ago july 23, 06. i broke my c4,5,6 incomplete quadriplegic in a wheelchair with limited mobility. since my injury i have no sensation of hunger and also have severe nerve pain from my belly button down. i’ve been on everything from vicodin to fentanyl patches and the only thing to work for my pain and hunger is eating or smoking marijuana. a psychologist at the rehab institute of chicago recommended it to me after my injury and it has worked wonders. ottawa, il fgc_quad@yahoo.com

I have ALS and there is absolutely no medicine available that treats the fasciculations that lead to severe pain from cramping. I can smoke marijuana and have over 24 hours of significantly reduced fasciculations and have almost complete relief of cramps. I also notice if I have a muscle that has totally seized up marijuana will allow the muscle to unwind under heat and not immediately spasms back into a painful cramp. I wish this ignorance would stop about marijuana. I have never tried an another ellicit drug and can function.

Another side effect is I am able to eat when I smoke. I have lost my gag reflex and choke when eating. I notice significantly less choking and gain my appetite immediately back upon smoking. My ALS is caused by a weird autoimmunity disorder and marijuana also causes my body to produce less white blood cells which is also slowing the progression of the disease.

The argument of “it sends the wrong message” is ridiculous. Morphine is much worse and addictive. You dont see kids doing morphine due to its prescribed to ease pain for someone dying of an untreatable disease. I risk jail just to try and live longer to watch my children grow up due to there are no treatments for als. The only approved drug allows for an additional 3 months of life.. in animal models marijuana slows the onset alone by 3-4 years… I feel some days I do not have this horrid disease due to the relief marijuana has given me.

I encourage everyone to not vote for anyone who votes no or does not vote on this bill and donate to their oppositions campaign funds. We must hold these ignorant people accountable.
