Dr. John Newmeyer is an epidemiologist and author of “Mother of All Gateway Drugs: Parables for Our Time.” He sits down with us to discuss his views on marijuana and the drug war in general.

The opinions expressed below by our viewers and posters do not necessarily represent the opinions of the Marijuana Policy Project. These views are those of the individual authors alone. MPP does not condone or support the illegal use of marijuana. We do encourage open and frank discussion, but if a comment has been posted that is in some way significantly inappropriate, please e-mail us at socialnetwork@mpp.org to report it. Thank you, and we're looking forward to what you think!

If you heavily tax a product that is cheap to produce, such as sensimilla, you are going to continue to have a thriving black market for that product. As taxes on cigarettes and alcohol have risen, the sale of loose cigarettes and moonshine have also increased.

The only way to effectively regulate the use of cannabis is through education. I agree with Bosco that excess taxation will only lead to increased black market procurement, and sales. However, acknowledging the different states of consciousness that are produced through cannabis use, and having a ongoing public discussion of the effects (good and bad) will work to reduce abuse (as it has with tobacco use). Truth always makes a difference, and given the truth, people can make sensible decisions.

My name is Kimbery and I have MS, I have been useing Marjuana to help my MS. and I can’t not find a Doctor in my Area ( Bonney Lake, Washington) to help me get Medical Marijuana to use for My MS, Do you have any Answers for me? I really would like to grow my own so it wouldn’t be so expensive for me and so that I would know just what is in it, because I would be the one to be growing it for just myself.
Thanks you for your time

I have a very simple request, quit putting our sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, yes even grandparents in jail.
To feed the 80 billion machine they (our so called leaders) consider sacraficing us as the cost of doing business. Reminds me of slavery except that it effects all races not just the black race. Although 1 in 3 blacks will be jailed due the this war on the American people
I feel our so called leaders should be put in jail. For waging this war on the American people and our free way of life. Orignally for racist reasons and now for personal gain by our nazie representatives!!
I feel in 100 years people will look back and view this era as our leaders enslaving us for pure greed. Name one other thing that keeps this war going? Drugs still flow people want them and as Americans we will have them. The cost keeps going up on the fight and the supply side. Good people are put in jail to be molested and raped by the real bad guys. So the only people that are happy are the corporations that make money off the way it is. Also the PAC’s that feed our leaders a regular supply of reelection money. In my mind they are commiting a crime against the American People, God Help Us.

I have worked all my life I pay my taxes, even thought our leaders throw the money away ( we just gave Mexico 400 million to eradicate marijuana plants) what a waste of our money. We have paid other country’s money to make marijuana illigal where it was legal and not causing any problem.
I ramble bad on this subject back to my thought.
I am 60 if I want to plant a few plants in my back yard and smoke what growns on them that is my right as an American. Even worse I am native American I feel I can do as I want as long as I do not hurt other people. If I do then put me in jail I can understand that and agree with it.
200 years ago if someone came on my land and cut down my plants and told me they were going to lock me in a box with crazy people. They would have been shot and buried in the garden. Now they say it is the law, I say it is a bad law, a stupid law, a law that will not work in a so called free country!!
