Plain and simple, the US government wants to control every aspect of our lives. We are expected to be good little tax payers and not question anything, aka sheeple! Until everyone realizes that they work for us and not vice versa we will continue down this dead end path. I recently was suspended from work simply for failing a random drug test for marijuana. Now should someone lose their means of support for simply smoking a joint? I agree that for now it is illegal, but so is speeding! Where do we draw the line?

If they hurry up and decriminalize at a national level then Obama can gain a lot of public support from people who generally sit inside and do no vote. We all had to admit eventually that we were wrong, and that just because we took D.A.R.E doesn't mean now we can go throwing innocent people in jail.

In my view the most incredible thing about this 70 year old prohibition is the fact that many of the founding fathers of this nation were farmers who grew hemp. And I have heard that farmers back then were actually required to grow it since it had so many positive uses. On our money it's stated "In God We Trust." Really? Then how could He (or She or It or whatever) allow this forbidden plant to appear on this earth?

Just my opinion for what it's worth.

because it would look bad for the government to admit, after 70 years of prohibition based on illogical bullshit, that marijuana is in fact not dangerous at all and that if all the people smoked it, the world would be a pretty chill and relaxing place to live in.

I honestly don't know. There are 2 kinds. One that makes you relax, and one that bugs you out. Probably the politicians smoked the bad kind and bugged out. Too bad. If they smoked the good kind it's the best anti-anxiety medicine in the world. Doesn't get you fucked up in your mind at all. Maybe if we can figure out which is the good kind and get the politicians to smoke it, they will chill out and stop being so paranoid, and world peace will follow. Also, it would be an enormous benefit to our economy in so many ways, from sales of twinkies and pizzas to movie rentals, there would millions of jobs created by legalizing it and everyone would be relaxed and happy. America would be the greatest place on earth with so many happy, relaxed people walking around high on the good herb. The only people who'd lose out would be the pharmaceutical companies because they sell nasty poisons that mess people up.

Hello my name is Simeon White. I am an Undergraduate at the university of Kansas. I wrote a paper my senior year in high school on marijuana reform and i would like to briefly present you with a few things I have noticed from government resources online. Marijuana prohibition costs are huge, with the economy falling at the rate it is, I believe that in taxing marijuana and making it legal like alcohol and tobacco. We can stabilize our economy. Given information from a government website (http://www.nida.nih.gov/infofacts/marijuana.html) that approximately 5 percent of high school students smoke marijuana daily. This means that if a smoker smokes approximately one gram a day then in one week they will approximately need a quarter ounce of marijuana, which could be an equivalent cost of a carton of cigarettes. Marijuana is cheap to produce so if a 15 dollar tax was placed on each quarter, licensed producers could still make profit on 25 dollars and the government would gain 15 dollars a week from every smoker. Another possibility would be to make a list of regulations on it like growing is still illegal and the producers with the license will be able to put more money into the economy and the government can lower taxes on other things to help people out with food or gas or anything they need. According to a consensus the projected population of public high school seniors alone is 14,797,000. (http://www.2010census.biz/prod/2006pubs/07statab/educ.pdf) a simple calculation between the two will bring the income to a total of $221,955,000 dollars per week or $81,069,060,000 per year. Now I haven’t taken into account the large numbers of tax money being spent on non-violent drug offenders. As many know the United States prison incarceration has just passed 2,000,000 people. From
(http://www.whitehousedrugpolicy.gov/publications/whos_in_prison_for_marij/whos_in_prison_for_marij.PDF) Approximately 2% of those are in for simple marijuana possession charges. 2% of 2,000,000 people is 40,000 people. That’s a lot, and the whole words are deceiving stuff on the government websites goes both ways, if you put some thought into it J . On another government website (http://www.usmarshals.gov/foia/IGAs-Cap%20Agreements/Montana/Broadwater%20County%20Det%20Ctr%20Working.pdf) The average cost for housing one inmate is $7,530 per year. Another simple calculation and we find it costs $301,200,000 per year to incarcerate people for marijuana possession. So my question to you is why are we spending $301,200,000 every year or more on marijuana prohibition instead of making $81,069,060,000 per year or more?
