A week after Attorney General Eric Holder announced that the Department of Justice would only target marijuana growers and collectives that were in violation of BOTH state and federal law, the DEA raided Emmalyn’s California Cannabis

Our political leaders share a growing awareness that this is an issue of interest to tens of millions of Americans and is therefore worthy of serious discussion.
Does the use of marijuana potentially pose some health risks? Sure. But the health risks of prison are worse, so we have to acknowledge that the current punishment for using marijuana is more harmful to the user than the use of marijuana itself.
Will the drug cartels continue to be criminals after marijuana is legalized? Sure. But they’ll be shorted out of a big chunk of revenue once people can grow or buy their own marijuana legally, and that means the cartels will have less money to buy guns and other tools of their trade, so we have to acknowledge that legalizing marijuana will hurt the drug cartels and make our cities (and Mexico) safer.
Do marijuana users sometimes have accidents or drive while intoxicated? Sure. But anyone who’s ever been around a drunk driver and a marijuana-using driver knows very well that the marijuana user is a much safer driver than the drunk, so we have to acknowledge that if drinkers switch to marijuana, our streets would be safer.
Are lots of people going to use marijuana whether it’s legal or not? Sure, but if it’s legal, it can be taxed and regulated, so we can’t ignore the economic benefits and social safety benefits of legal, taxable, regulated marijuana compared to the illegal, untaxed, unregulated, gang-controlled prohibition that we have today.
As a nation we have the choice between either spending $20,000 a year to lock up a marijuana user or collecting sales tax on the individual’s purchase of this widely used, relatively safe product. To collect taxes from the grow-your-own community, we could consider a $100 per year permit for a dozen plants.
It’s time to put the criminal drug dealers out of business and let ordinary Americans grow a little marijuana in their own back yards.

I am seething and enraged. I did NOT vote for this guy to create a crushing debt to saddle my grandchildren with. I did NOT vote for him to give billions and billions of taxpayer’s to greedy, irresponsible corporations and to give millions of dollars in bonuses for their greedy and incompetent executives.
No, I voted his butt into office for one reason, and one reason alone…. to end the War on Drugs and free us from a prison state. And now he laughs and mocks the whole thing. OUTRAGEOUS!!!
And now I hear he has unleashed his DEA goons on another dispensary raid! How rich is that?
That’s ok though, no problem. At least we now know who he REALLY is. Anyone who still thinks this guy is about changing the prison state should have just received a wake-up call. If you still believe in this guy, you are a fool. While I readily admit that he is still better than McCain would have been in this area, at least McCain wouldn’t have tripled the deficit in his first two months in office!
I am quite simply disguted with Mr. Obama. I will no longer support his hypocritical administration. I pledge that I will fight tooth and nail to oppose ALL of his policies in the future.
Thanks for nothing there Mr. “President

Is it possible that the DEA/Feds are defying Obama on purpose in order to make him look bad?
It’s obvious the Republicans are doing anything they can to discredit and break the Obama administration.
Is it possible that they (Republicans) have a hand in all of this rebelliousness in the government?
There is obviously a breach in the chain of command. The Commander & Chief needs to put his foot down and make some heads roll. If he sits back & does nothing, you know he’s just of a puppet with good public speaking skills.
I guess the nation will be watching on April 30, 2009 to see the sentencing outcome of Charles Lynch. IMO, this will be a true barometer of where this administration stands on medical cannabis and what we can expect during his term.
The USA will never be a free country until we have changed the laws (and the politicians) that keep us psychologically incarcerated.

Keep your PROMISE Mr. President.I, am totally offended and dismayed at the flippant attitude Obama had regarding such a serious issue. People are dying across our border by the thousands, here at home MILLIONS of non violent drug offenders are incarcerated, their families devastated and left homeless by DEA confiscation of EVERYTHING. Mr. President, how is this FUNNY? I have an MAT with a specialization in teaching reading,(second career) a Medical Technology and Business degree BS/BA respectively, and a 17 year Army veteran. Please stop perpetuating the lies that pot users are lazy, dumb, and unmotivated. You stated this morning that Afghanistan’s violence is fueled by narcotics trafficking. The time is NOW to stop the drug war that feeds the violence and breeds corruption and social strife around the world!

B, I think you have a point. My first thought on hearing about the raid on Emmalyn’s was that the DEA was defying Obama either to embarrass him, as you suggest, or for some other unworthy reason. Only time will tell if this is a single act of insubordination or a signal that Obama has lied. So, you folks that are mad at Obama, please cool down and wait to find out what really happened here. Although Obama was flippant about the legalization question at his recent town hall, he doesn’t come across as an Anslinger-style drug “warrior.” I still think he’s the best chance we’ve had at legalization in a long, long time.
Weird. I’m a long-time Republican posting on a marijuana legalization forum in defense of a Democrat president. Strange days, indeed…

Taking a courageous stand on something as controversial as the drug war –i.e., marijuana regulation to contribute to the economy rather than draining it with prosecutions–will be last on any politicians’ list. Drug routes rule the world. It is dangerous to disrupt them.
President Obama can instead let Congress take the lead by calling hearings to reconsider the current classification of cannabis–”no medical purpose” (Schedule I). The 1970 Controlled Substances Act embodied in the text a reference that if times changed and medical purposes emerged, hearings could be held to determine the reasonableness of a change: restoring prescription access to cannabis as a safe effective medicine.

@Adle
You’re right. And this is a good cause, although I’ve had a hard time convincing some of my conservative comrades. See, from a conservative viewpoint, state rights are important. Shouldn’t all conservatives be outraged by the DEA raids in California? From a conservative viewpoint, smaller, less-intrusive government is the goal. The “war” on drugs blows that idea out of the water. Hell, even the religious conservatives should be for legalization, since the Bible clearly states that God gave us “every herb bearing seed.” (And he spoke from a burning bush. Intriguing…)
I suppose I should concentrate my efforts on reaching Republican legislators and trying to shift their views. I speak their language; maybe I can change a few minds.

Heya, Pebbles. It doesn’t take Congress to reschedule marijuana. The Attorney General can do it. And he should. As far as I can tell, marijuana is the only substance in the CSA that’s classified as more dangerous and less useful than its active ingredient. Coca and cocaine are in the same schedule. So are peyote and mescaline. Opium poppies, IIRC, are Schedule II while heroin is Schedule I. Marijuana is still Schedule I, but THC is Schedule III. WTF? That’s like saying that caffeine is okay, but coffee, tea, and cocoa are dangerous.

I wrote to President Obama. BY the way, why on earth is anyone offended, acting surprised or hating the DEA. Those DEA guys are doing what they are told to do. I hate their job in area of Marijuana too, especially Medical Marijuana. I hear some of them do too.
The POINT is WE HAVE TO SOMEHOW in this short 4 years get the supreme court to remove Marijuana from Schedule 1 status. In essence, correct me if I’m wrong, we have 9 Supreme Court justices that are telling 100 million Americans lies and basically running the “Show”. I DO mean “show” too. Read the full law concerning Marijuana’s Attempted rescheduling in the beginning of the 70’s. It tells the truth about many aspects of the good qualities of Marijuana found during a study and after this huge report of good things, they find that…well you know…it’s STILL Schedule 1- RIDICULOUS!!! – to liken Pot with Heroin and Cocaine is pure ignorance. The Law is not based on common sense. People who perpetuate these lies really only read this garbage in some book.
If anyone knows of a video where President Obama is laughing at this event PLEASE post a link. Contact the whitehouse.gov site and tell him right there too.
This is what I wrote to the president;
Hello, Mr. President, during your time on the campaign trail, you softly mentioned that you would not use federal money to harass and raid Medical Marijuana Dispensaries that were in compliance with state law. That showed much wisdom and compassion to millions of people. I was extremely glad and it was one of the reasons I voted for you.
You see, I suffer greatly every day from Multiple Sclerosis and anything to help quell pain and nausea that doesn’t hurt anyone else is a blessing to me. If there is any harm to other people in the process of obtaining it, it is caused by the Marijuana’s illegality and instigated and perpetrated mainly by Law Enforcement.
This brings me to my main point which is Marijuana remains, as far as the Federal Government is concerned, useless, very dangerous and highly illegal. Very sick people, the Federal government and the States that have Chosen Compassion in this area will always be at odds until this is changed.
Marijuana must be removed from Schedule 1 status so that it can be clinically studied and regulated, at least for very ill people who’s doctors have the integrity to admit (at the risk of their own well being) that Marijuana might be helpful for this particular patient.
Do we really still need this war on Marijuana on our home front? Don’t we have enough war in this world already? Please listen to stories and read what people have to say on the MPP.org website.
I am very concerned that you are simply turning a blind eye to the Medicinal values of Marijuana, in addition that Hemp and its byproducts would, if allowed; replace a lot of our petroleum based products and help make 100 million people feel truly FREE in America.
Turning a blind eye to Federal law doesn’t look too good for a new president to me, sick or not. My biggest fear now is that you will not address this and people will be signing up all over the nation only to set themselves up for a huge BUST the day some new president comes into office with a huge grudge against Marijuana and all the good you have allowed will turn into a nightmare for the sick and dying like during the last 4 administrations. You can solve so many problems at once by presenting some sort of bill or agenda to the Supreme Court so that they will be forced to re-evaluate this ridiculous, antiquated, mean-spirited and corporate agenda filled law and have Medical Marijuana removed form Schedule 1 status.
If reduced to Schedule 5 status (where it should be, in my opinion) and regulated and taxed, consider the incredible influx of money out of the Mexican Mafia’s hands into the American economy and the jobs created! Consider that good decent and hard working citizens cannot get a job or are getting let go from long held jobs or positions for one reason alone and that’s failing a drug screen for Marijuana only – smoked a week or whatever ago. It’s getting downright stupid, in my humble opinion, to keep fighting an unwinnable war. Consider my words, you are not ending the War on Marijuana you merely are calling a truce.
SO, if you see I missed something important and relevent, write him about it. Let’s not stop harassing these supposed representatives, because it’s OBVIOUS that they will not stop harrasing US! Let’s flood their desks – Emails and phones and actually meet these people- you can make appointments with these people locally and in person. I was ignorant. In this fight I learned what lobbying is, and that’s just it. Stay on them! In all things too. They get away with far too much.

I just saw the Obama video under “Obama got it wrong”. I just watched the front page video and jumped all over it. This Video – right from the whitehouse.gov really is disturbing. Why didn’t he at least say he will abide by what he infered concerning Medical Marijuana. Bamboozeled again. Clinton pulled that too. Carter tried and addressed it as a serious concern, but obviously failed.
I am Online, I read the newspaper and watch TV. I also go places too like when I used to work my butt off before I got really ill. What does he mean online audience? He spoke as if we are only a small sect of society and all we do is sit around and smoke pot. Do not slam the very audience you invited to watch and participate, Mr. President! Outrageous! I am glad for Governmental transparancy, now I know what he really thinks. I should have written myself in for President. It would have done juat as much good in this case, it seems.

Yes someone has bought Mr . president. For him to shift to not supporting legaization or de-crim for that matter so fast? Either he lied to his supporters or he was bought, or both.
In the end its up to all of us,if all states end up with pro-marijuana laws on the books, what then, will the fed still fight us?
Its weird though,I find my self saying”He didnt say he doesnt support legalization, just legalization for economic growth’, What does all this mean? Who the hell knows, just keep up the fight people!

This is quite disturbing indeed, although I don’t believe that Obama is who i would immediately blame. Although he has insulted me and everyone else (who indulges with a little bit of that oh so fine substance that has one fourth of the nations DEA budget being spent on it and has yet to record a single death due to its use) on a level of which i believe to be unprecedented… I personally did not vote for Obama yet still believe in him as our nations Commander and Chief.
I would consider the possibility that this particular “pot club” was not in complete compliance with State law. If in fact it was in complete compliance, the next person i would blame would be the Head of the San Francisco DEA unit He/She may have a grudge on any type of marijuana, recreational or medicinal, because what he/she says goes and if he/she ordered this raid then the public should consider writing to a congressman or attorney general demanding the removal of this particular he/she
In the slight chance that this was Obama’s doings… Bring him up on impeachment charges for lack of character, as well as defacing the ultimate government official position.(by the way this last scenario is never going to happen…)

I want to give benefit of doubt to Obama’s not authorizing this latest raid but rather the DEA taking it upon themselves to do as they ‘deem necessary’. The owners should’ve been informed by the DEA what specific state laws have been broken right then and there during the raid. It’s the equivilent of arresting somebody walking down the street and when he/she asks, ‘What are you arresting me for?’ the only answer given is ‘You broke the law.” I hope that that factors into being helpful to the defense in their efforts to have charges dismissed. Hmmm…. Since state laws were alledgedly broken here, will the case ever be heard in a CA State Court? And IF State of CA laws were being violated, where were the State of CA law enforcement officers?
When will the Federal Government stop wasting its time and our tax dollars on this type of nonsense? Is it any wonder we are a gazillion dollars in debt?

This is what happens when you have a president who talks the talk, but doesn’t walk the walk. Don’t feel bad, a lot of people including myself fell for it.
Obama needs to change the laws that give the DEA their power over medical marijuana. He won’t because he’s a coward. He says this and that, and the people cheer. Yet all the while he does nothing, and laughs at the victims of his inaction.
I will not be voting for him a 2nd time. He can laugh his way right out of the White House.
Vote for Ron Paul in 2012 if you want real change, he seems to be the only one in DC with the balls to defend people against injustice.
Mar 30th, 2009
you dont get it
the attorney general only said that he would not raid dispensaries that are in compliance with california law…. any dispensary that is created for profit (aka the great majority of dispensaries) are not legal by california law. the only “legitimate” dispensary that i’ve ever heard of is the santa cruz’s Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana http://www.wamm.org.
in fact, all of the dispensaries that have been raided in the past were in violation of california law.

Everyone seems to be mad at the DEA. Yes the DEA could respect with the Obama administration SAID to the media and not follow through on these raids.
However, we are talking about the Drug Enforcement Agency, their purpose is to enforce the federal drug laws. Marijuana is on their list, Obama has NOT removed it from their list. The Obama administration, and your congressional leaders are responsible for this, not the DEA. Federal laws must be changed before we can expect anything.
So stop praising him for being about “CHANGE” when the truth is he hasn’t changed a damn thing. What has he done to prevent this from happening? NOTHING!

There is more we can do. We have to stand up for what the country WANTS and NEEDS. People have to take the initiative if they want real change. It’s no different than anything else America has had to do in the past.
To end slavery, we had a civil war. To give African-Americans the right to vote, we had years of marches in large cities only to end up with TERRIBLE race riots before anything really got moving (God Bless MLK Jr,)
Marijuana was made Illegal because of american greed and racism, not health factos or violence. So in essence, we need to march on Washighton D.C. itself and threaten the very control of the Gov’t, and all the greedy Politicians, Lobbyist and CEO’s that have taken over this GREAT COUNTRY. What happens when the American dollar becomes as valuable as a peso and it cost you ungodly ammounts to even buy food for your families, let alone live in a house or own property. It’s no secret why 97% of the worlds money is in 1% of the populations hands.
I am American, I believe in Democracy Damnit. Not this Hippocracy that gives the illusion of it. This is America of the people, for the people, by the people. We need a drastic change in how this country is run and I promise you neither the Democrats or Republicans will let that happen unless we force them too. Talk and protests will only get us LAUGHED at AGAIN.
PEOPLE SHOULD NOT FEAR THEIR GOVERNMENTS, GOVERNMENTS SHOULD FEAR THEIR PEOPLE.
They can’t incarcerate a whole country, but the country sure as hell can incarcerate them. For they are nothing but traitors and communist for manipulating the system that was put in place to prevent such things from every happening.
But it saddens me to say we have become nothing more than Romans, and we all know what happened to them. It’s not the DEA, FDA or even the god damn President. The problem is us, and we are to blame. Our Fathers before us could have made every change necessary, but didn’t out of CONTENT and FEAR. I’d rather change America before EVERYONE hates US and eventually UNITES against US…. Again
I’m sorry if I offend anyone with my radical Ideology. But from a historical standpoint, it’s what I’ve come to believe is “correct.” I PRAY that we come to our senses before we become the very thing we sought out to destroy.

Obama is concentrated on one issue alone right now. The economy is forefront in everyone’s mind all across the world. That doesn’t help me. I got laid off recently and I also got a misdemeanor weed charge to deal with and now I have to pay a lawyer, court costs and might get jail time and a hefty fine instead of using what little money I have to pay bills. I quit smoking it 2 months ago even though it helps my arthritis pain. I am 50 yrs old. I guess Advil will have to do.

I recognize that legalizing marijuana might be difficult, politically. I do understand that Obama has a lot on his plate right now. And I DO get angry when I hear about things like this recent dispensary raid. But what angers me most is that I feel we were led on by his election campaign, which, giving support to medical MJ, suggested a new and better attitude toward alternative drugs and the drug war, which now seems to have been a false promise. But I still believe he’s an honest man, and that he will come around, when he’s done more of what he deems to be more important, as long as we keep the pressure on.
He may not “believe in legalizing marijuana,” but, a does he believe in freedom? And, does he believe in justice? Those are the real issues, in my mind. We will never be free, until we have complete sovereignty over our own bodies, and there will never be justice, until we are permitted to legally choose pot, a far better alternative to legal alcohol. I do have HOPE that he will eventually come around, when he can better afford it politically. If not, we’ve all been screwed, again.
We MUST keep the pressure on. Every single one of us must write to him every single day, with the same ‘ol, same ‘ol, logical, ethical, legal, economic, justice and freedom-based arguments for legalization. Never let up, and never give up! THAT he might eventually understand.

Enough already. Nearly 50% of people incarcerated for drugs in this country are there because of Marijuanna. This is madness. The War On Drugs is NOT working. When will policy makers wake up and be logical and see drugs as an issue for healthcare proffessionals. Humans wil always find dangerous substances to abuse and marijuanna is not only NOT dangerous but medicinal for many many conditions. Obama and the rest of Capitol Hill keep your promises. Open your minds and hearts. This is no laughing matter. Sincerely, A very concerned mother, citizen and healthcare professional.

I kept trying to tell people that Obama is just lying about many of the things he spoke about. I’m not up for McCain, but at least he does what he says, but I went for Ron Paul, who stated that we should follow the Constitution, get us out of supporting the rest of the world and correcting the debt, along with smaller government.
We will be paying for the rest of my life, what little there is! And we will pay for Obama’s GREEN tax also, could cost a lot of us over $3K a month. It taxes higher where you have non reusable energy, so if you have a coal generator, instead of a dam, the coal users pay into the energy tax. I didn’t have any say in what power plant was built or what it ran on!
BTW many of the laws we have are NOT logical, if they were they would keep “Common Law” instead of saying it doesn’t exist now and we will write all the laws. So if they forgot Murder (which they didn’t) it would not be illegal! So they drop in stuff like “Crimes against nature” in their statues, what the hell is that? Well I think it’s a CYA for missing something!
The next thing he will do (if he gets to it) is disarm all of us, he left a long anti-gun voting record and a long “Here, but no vote” on something. If we get though this, it will be a miracle! I live in the Western Montana and when I take my dogs out, I could run into black or Grizzly bears, we need guns to protect ourselves and our animals out here!
So a lot of you voted for him, thanks, just remember not only do you have to follow him, but for 4 more years.
Another angle that might be pursued is moving the MM to be overseen by the Health Education and Welfare group (house) to change it legal position instead of the Crime group (House).
I believe that the number I have is that we have 5% of the worlds population and 25% are incarcerated, most on minor drug holding offenses. I don’t think Obama can figure how much of that is black or minorities!
One other thing, when I was little everyone liked the cops, now that the War on Drugs (WOD) has been running since the end of the sixties, I find most people don’t like police anymore, what has changed? Mostly people are afraid that it’s going to cost them when police pull them over and if you are a smoker (even MM) then you are paranoid about the stop. Direct connection to the downfall of people having good will towards them. There are a lot of good cops, so don’t write them all off. Like LEAP!
Good Luck everyone!
J
P.S. You might look up LEAP (www.leap.cc) which is “Law Enforcement Against Prohibition” and they will take anyone into the group who believes that the war on drugs has done no good for anyone and should be repealed.

This is an outrage! Then again, Im not surprised. I sincerely think that Obama isnt going to do anything about the nations policy on marijuana, and I think this is a very sad thing.
A few weeks ago I watched my one of my best friends get a gun pulled to his head while purchasing a pound of marijuana – not just for him, it was for me as well as others. Our money got stolen and my other friend got in a car accident while trying to catch the thieves. Take the business of distributing marijuana AWAY from the criminals and cartels!!!! Prohibition is throwing money into the pockets of these criminals, and it is not fair for everyone that are NOT bad people but happen to smoke marijuana anyways. Incidents such as these would not happen if marijuana were regulated and distributed in a non-criminal/sketch-bag manner.
There is no reason to prohibit marijuana! I just don’t understand why the government cannot wrap there big, dumb head around it. I’ve heard them say marijuana has more carcinogens then a cigarette – even though this isnt true, it doesn’t change the fact that cigarettes kill more people then marijuana ever will. They say marijuana MIGHT cause psychosis after long term use – this isn’t clinically proven, and even if it was that doesn’t give right to prohibit a substance because of the fact.
Give it up already!!! Marijuana was made illegal for due to racist reasons! Stop living in the past! Listen to the medicinal facts, and more importantly listen to the PEOPLE who you are governing and who gives you the power!

Lets quit being ridiculous and using a word that will never ever ever be used and that word is legalization. How about we use the word DECRIMINALIZATION, alcohol and cigarrettes aren’t even LEGAL, legalization would allow four year olds to buy pot… thats not smart at all seeing to how we all know that the use of marijuana takes a certain amount of responsibility.
PUSH FOR DECRIMINALIZATION AND REGULATION ALONG WITH TAXATION…

This smells like some Repugs in the chain of command trying to embarrass Obama and shift attention from health care, as a few others have noted. I see a lot of Obama-bashers blaming him for this but it’s a safe bet he didn’t order it or know about it beforehand. I hope he tracks down and fires the dishonest schemers that engineered it. You know they knew full well what they were doing, and they succeeded, but Obama if he plays this smart will just tell the Attorney General to deschedule MJ as a way to end Prohibition-style abuses of government and save billions of dollars too. HOW MUCH MONEY CAN WE SAVE IN THE BUDGET BY ENDING THE WAR ON DRUGS, EXACTLY? OBAMA WE ARE READY FOR THE CHANGE YOU PROMISED.
